The 2020 Chateau Tournefeuille, Lalande de Pomerol, Bordeaux was a Merchant's Pick
Staggering Bordeaux value is a Petrus neighbor!
February 06, 2024
Chateau Tournefeuille is one of the best-kept secrets in Bordeaux.
A brief stroll down a windy road takes you from Chateau Tournefeuille in Lalande-de-Pomerol to the neighboring village of Pomerol.
This jaunt doesn't take you just anywhere. It takes you to the doorsteps of one of Bordeaux's most prized estates, Chateau Petrus (at $2,000 per bottle).
In fact, the Tournefeauille hillside leads down a slope, where a creek is all that separates Lalande-de-Pomerol from the more recognized Pomerol.
This is a beauty! A blackberry and blueberry core wraps around fine, chewy tannins. Rustic underbrush and ripe fruit are supported by balanced structure. Plum flavors from the Merlot offer a plushy, silky finish. The Cabernet Franc provides notes of underbrush and earth. Fresh tobacco leaf and earth are hallmarks of this great wine. A hint of mild oak offers a bit of vanilla. It is wonderfully balanced and a great example of this fine vintage.
Within the industry, it is known that the hilltop terroir of Chateau Tournefeuille (overlooking Petrus) is nearly identical to its neighbor with its site-specific clay and gravel slopes.
2020 Bordeaux is a gorgeous vintage recognized for its balance, charm, and harmony. Within the vintage, Chateau Tournefeuille is easily one of the best Bordeaux values.
This smoking good Lalande-de-Pomerol is "an excellent wine." Decanter
Enjoy!
