"Familiar names have risen in price, but great, unexplored values still abound." Eric Asimov
The 2021 Brigaldera Valpolicella was just named among the New York Times' best values under $20.
Brigaldara is not a new - or unexplored - name for us. We have featured Brigaldara over the years: their Amarone, this Valpolicella red, and recently their stunning white.
As wine merchants, we love finding gems that drink above their price point. This is a perfect example of a price-to-quality ratio that exceeds the spend.
"Classic Valpolicella is a straightforward style, made without the added power and richness that comes with the increasingly popular ripasso method, in which the wine macerates with grape skins left over from Amarone production. Good classic examples, like this bottle from Brigaldara, are pure and easy, with floral aromas and flavors of sweet cherry that resolve with a refreshing bitterness. Pizza and Valpolicella is an excellent combination." Eric Asimov, NYT
What We Love About Brigaldara
I remember in my early days of selling wine when the NYT 20 under $20 list would come out.
The store bustled, and phones rang - everyone trying to get a taste of their favorite style of wine off the list. People would flock to the store with the list in hand.
Many of the wines were unavailable by the time the list came out. Many of the wines were on to the next vintage.
Our favorite on the recent list is a wine we recommend regularly - Brigaldara!
Buy by the case and enjoy with pizza, pasta, and hearty salads. Don't forget a few of their white - it's also a no-brainer.
Enjoy!
