Domestic DRC Rivals Burgundy

January 29, 2024

We knew it was only a matter of time before this domestic DRC took a considerable price increase.

For years, Bertrand de Villaine of Domaine de la Romanee-Conti (aka, DRC) has been quietly producing "Composition," a domestic Pinot Noir made exclusively for Michelin Star restaurants.  A small amount is reserved for retail.

Aptly called "Composition," this Pinot Noir is an amalgamation of the terroir, which reveals itself in the wine.

Burgundian in style, Composition showcases dark cherry and freshly-picked strawberry on entry.  Hints of date and fig run through the palate.  The wine is framed with terrific dusty and textured tannins.  An earthy, woodsy, even meaty finish is followed by pink pepper and dried spice, which balances the fruit. The finish is endless and the acidity refreshes the palate. A few minutes in the glass and the wine evolves to a super-velvety, silky Pinot.

Composition is a food wine (think salmon, lean meats, and roasted chicken).

Other notable facts worth mentioning:

  • Pommard clones are sourced from Winter's Hill Vineyard adjacent to Domaine Serene;
  • The breezy cool nights of Winter's Hill are akin to summers in Vosne-Romanee, Burgundy;
  • Domaine de la Romanee-Conti (DRC) may very well be the most collectible and iconic wines of Burgundy (and even the wine world).  Their Romanee-Conti, Romanee-Conti (the most iconic of the Grand Crus) fetches $15,000 per bottle (yes, bottle!).

Make sure you get to taste the best-kept secret in Oregon!

While supplies last, quantities are extremely limited.

Enjoy!

“Evocative of Burgundy. Beautiful.”

"This Pinot Noir is from a unique plot in the Chehalem Mountains appellation in the Valley's north end. The dry-farmed, biodynamic site is one of the oldest plantings of Pinot Noir in the Willamette, having been planted by Dick Erath. The aromatics perfectly combine smoky violets, earth-driven umami and gorgeous red bramble berries. The palate shows these old vines' character with a depth and complexity framed by notes of turned earth, pine bough and forest floor. There is ample fresh fruit here, as blood orange and red berries are evocative of Burgundy. Beautiful.”
