The 2018 Domaine Louis Latour, Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru was a Merchant's Pick
Grand Cru Burgundy • #6 WS Wine Of The Year!
July 25, 2023
If you love white Burgundies or ever wanted to know why there is such a fuss for Grand Cru white Burgs, this is the wine to try.
Sometimes, it's hard to express the elegance of a Grand Cru white Burgundy. I'll give it a shot -
White Burgundies are among my favorite whites. The good ones hit the palate with wonderful acidity and balanced, elegant fruit. The great ones are simply breathtaking!
The 2018, featured today, is in a class by itself.
"Fresh and fruity, with aromas and flavors of lemon, pear, white flowers and stone, showing great tension and an underlying mineral component that gives this energy and length. The lemon theme continues on the lingering aftertaste, along with butter and pastry accents... Latour’s Corton-Charlemagne shows great tension and an underlying mineral component that lends energy and length." Wine Spectator
The Grand Cru hill of Corton is known for its limestone soil, which imparts wonderful structure to this Chardonnay. Louis Latour is the largest holder of property within this coveted hill. I have enjoyed four fantastic vintages over the past few years: 2014, 2016, 2017, and 2018. It is among my favorite Corton producers, especially since Corton-Charlemagne wines can fetch in excess of $750 per bottle.
It gracefully caresses the palate with sublime fruit and a hint of oak; the finish builds with a stony minerality that frames the nearly divine experience.
"There are whispers that Burgundy 2018 is one of the greatest ever vintages." Decanter, Tim Atkins
And as my wife aptly described, "This is a good one!"
Serve this gorgeous Grand Cru on the warmer side of cold to enhance the wine's already impeccable fruit and acidity.
This world-class white may be enjoyed now through 2040.
Cheers!
