The 2018 Chateau Potensac, Medoc, Bordeaux was a Merchant's Pick
It's Amazing What a Few Years Of Age Does To Bordeaux
September 10, 2025
We tasted the 2018 Chateau Potensac about six years ago when it was first released. It was nice then - quite nice actually, but it was a little young at the time. I have been sitting on a bottle and decided to enjoy it last weekend.
It's amazing what a little age will do to a well-built Bordeaux.
With eight years of bottle age, time has treated this beautiful Bordeaux quite well! Today, the 2018 Chateau Potensac is an impressive Bordeaux with layers of fruit and a lovely sense of terroir. Earth, integrated tannins, balanced fruit, and a classic finish only found in Bordeaux.
Modestly priced for Bordeaux, time has softened the tannins and given the fruit an integrated array of earth and spice along with a touch of herbaceousness. The once young dark fruit has been replaced by a bit more red-brick hues. This little beauty has bloomed into a classic Bordeaux: plummy red fruit, cassis, dried spices, and snapped tree bark aromas. On the palate, you will marvel at the delicate notes of violet, cedar and mild oak that wrap the core of berries. Enjoy now and/or consume at your leisure over the next 5 years.
The 2018 Potensac was a "sleeper" years ago; today it is a shining star!
Chateau Potensac shares the same owners as Leoville Las Cases; it is their property in the Médoc region of Bordeaux.
The pedigree of this under-the-radar Bordeaux rings loud and clear with each sip.
Enjoy all fall and winter with any food you can imagine - it's that good!
Also, fell free to keep a few for the next five years as the tannins are beautifully integrated and balanced.
Cheers!
Amazing when it was release in 2018, eight years later it is utterly stunning!
