The 2021 Rudd, "Oakville Estate" Proprietary Red, Napa Valley was a Merchant's Pick

Our #3 Wine Of The Year

January 05, 2026

The bar was set quite high for 2021 Napa Valley reds. The vintage was exceptional—widely described as a classic, five-star year. Across the board, wines were sensational, showcasing remarkable fruit purity, structure, and balance.

But even in a year this strong, one wine rose clearly above the rest.

If you’re a California Cabernet fan, a Bordeaux devotee, or simply someone who appreciates truly great red wine, the 2021 Rudd Oakville Estate Proprietary Red will stop you in your tracks.

Rudd’s Oakville Estate drinks far more like a great claret than a typical Napa Cabernet. It’s not about brute force or ripeness—it’s about restraint, precision, and harmony. This is Oakville at its most elegant.

A rarified wine. Freshly picked red and black currants and black cherries lead the charge, seamlessly layered with Earl Grey tea, dried rosemary, and herbs de Provence. Violet flowers and cinnamon wrap the aromatic core, creating an intricate, evolving bouquet.

On the palate, the wine is poised and harmonious, revealing additional notes of plum, dark cocoa, and freshly ground espresso. Accents of black olive and anise add savory depth, while vibrant acidity carries through a long, precise finish. Dusty, finely grained tannins provide structure with impressive density of flavor, amplifying the wine’s length and balance.

This is a wine that—given the ideal vintage—can be enjoyed now or cellared confidently for decades.
[83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot]

What struck us most about this majestic claret was its signature profile—one we’ve seen repeat itself over the years: garrigue, tilled soil, and cedar chest, layered with hints of tobacco and dried Provençal herbs.

We’ve enjoyed many Bordeaux—at considerably higher price points, we might add—that do not command this level of nuance, depth, and balance. In fact, this red is more Bordeaux-like than many Bordeaux being made today.

As Wine Enthusiast notes:

“In the heart of the Napa Valley, Oakville is the go-to address for California Cabernet Sauvignon, where the top producers of luxury wines tend their vines.”

Add a truly great California vintage for Cabernet-based wines, and it’s no surprise that the 2021 Rudd Oakville Estate Proprietary Red stood head and shoulders above so many exceptional wines we tasted in 2025.

Decant for about 30 minutes if you plan to enjoy it now (which you should), or cellar with confidence for another 25 years

Cheers.

“Strikingly aromatic with intriguing savoury nuances.”

Decanter • 99 / 100

"Rudd Estate is situated in east Oakville, where vines are subject to late afternoon sun and heat, so mitigating those effects in the vineyard is paramount to ensure a "crescendo of acidity," as winemaker Natalie Bath puts it. Strikingly aromatic with intriguing savoury nuances that lead with ironstone volcanic minerals, nuanced by sagebrush, spicebush, and dried tobacco leaves, framed by pure black cherry, blackberry, and cassis. Medium-bodied, lifted, fresh, and filled with vitality on the palate, layered with more cherry and black currant, fragrant dried herbs and fig leaf, which weave an aromatic and flavour-driven tapestry around the ultra-fine-grained dusty tannins, which dissolve like fine powdery minerals, building to a long earth-and-cocoa-nib-driven finish. There is such freshness and vibrancy in this elegantly fashioned red. The 2021 harvest, completed on the early side by mid-September, marks Natalie Bath's first vintage entirely in the driver's seat as Rudd Estate winemaker (she first worked in the cellars back in 2012)."
