Former "Wine Of The Decade") Impresses Again!

August 01, 2025

The demand for Almaviva continues to outpace supply.  Rightly so, the quality is stunning!

A few vintages ago, James Suckling awarded Almaviva "Wine of The Decade" and "Chilean Wine Of The Year."  In the past 3 years, the wine has consistently received accolades and 98 - 100 point scores.  It is recognized as Chile's 1st Growth (a reference to Bordeaux's highly prized 1st Growth).

Co-owned by Bordeaux's Rothschild Family, which also owns Opus One in California, Almaviva has also earned the reputation as the “Opus One of Chile.”

If Almaviva were from Bordeaux, it would easily be twice the price.  Blackberry, cassis, and tea leaves intermingle with wild and exotic rose, lavender, and earth underneath.  Full-bodied and silky, the wine showcases its chewy, powerful tannins without overpowering.  It’s structured and dense but not extracted.  Hints of tobacco leaf and walnut remind us of a fine Bordeaux.

If you missed prior vintages of Almaviva or are looking to add to your collection, 2021 is another gorgeous expression of the wine.

Availability of this tremendous Cabernet blend is limited with each release as more of the wine remains overseas.

Be among the select few to enjoy this blockbuster Bordeaux blend from Chile, which is now ready to be enjoyed and will continue to mature over the next 15 years.

Enjoy!

"The Opus One of Chile" Lands Decanter's 20 Best Cabernets

“Silky tannins in the seamless finish.”

James Suckling • 98 / 100

"A fresh and discreet Almaviva with subtle pencil shavings and cigar box to the cassis and hints of chili chocolate and peppermint. Nuanced and subtle on the nose. This is medium-bodied and subtle on the palate with silky tannins in the seamless finish. Very long. 71% cabernet sauvignon, 22% carmenere, 5% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot."

“An impressive wine from one of the very best recent Chilean vintages.”

Tim Atkin • 98 / 100

Michel Friou compares the brilliant 2021 Almaviva to the 2018, and I think he’s right in terms of the quality and complexity of the Cabernet Sauvignon that sits at this wine’s core... A wine that’s proudly Chilean, it’s a pan-regional cuvée that partners Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot from Puente Alto with 22% Carmenère Peumo. Cassis, mulberry and Mediterranean herb avours of fennel and lavender... lots of texture and weight, bright acidity and minerality and a precise, focused finish. An impressive wine from one of the very best recent Chilean vintages.

“A classy, harmonious wine.”

Decanter • 97 / 100

"Crafted by Michel Friou from a legendary vineyard in Puente Alto, this is a precise red blend that balances opulence with elegance. The nose delivers blackcurrant, cherry, redcurrant and liquorice aromas with hints of violets, eucalyptus, spice, and pencil shavings. Fleshy, with a juicy, energetic core and polished tannins that promise ageing potential. A classy, harmonious wine. A blend of 71% Cabernet Sauvignon and 22% Carmenère, with dashes of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it was aged for 20 months in new French barrels."
