The 2021 Casa Lapostolle Clos Apalta, Apalta Valley Chile was a Merchant's Pick
OUR #4 WINE OF THE YEAR • AN INSTANT WOW!
December 28, 2024
Ribs, stews, and your favorite chili recipe - that's what came to mind the moment we sipped this charismatic Chilean red.
We wouldn't call it opulent as it is so wonderfully balanced. The Carmenere (the dominant grape in this blend) exudes warm dark berries and rich fruit, suggestive of a gorgeous Cabernet Franc. The fabric of texture and acidity woven among the fruit is simply captivating.
Think of this red as a plushy robe and bedroom slipper combination on a cold day. It just seems right.
"Extremely aromatic with red currants, blackcurrants, spices, iodine, paprika and subtle hints of white pepper. Fresh flowers, fresh sage, lavender and some pine needles and sandalwood. Endless balance and length. It's so balanced that you could drink it now but it will age for decades." James Suckling
Stunning Blend Of 75% Carmenere, 18% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 7% Merlot
Chilean reds were officially put on the map in 2008 when the 2005 Clos Apalta was awarded Wine Spectator's #1 Wine Of The Year. Who is on the Clos Apalta team? World-renowned blending expert Michel Rolland. Rolland has consulted for prestigious wineries worldwide, including Château Angélus and Château Pavie in Bordeaux, Harlan Estate in Napa Valley, and Casa Lapostolle in Chile.
100-year-old vines are meticulously tended to in the winery's mountainous amphitheater. The Clos Apalta vineyards have all the ingredients to craft layered, complex reds. The winery has a rigorous process of sorting each cluster to ensure only the finest fruit contributes to this extraordinary wine.
If you are a Burgundy fan and only enjoy high-toned cherry and old-world acidity in your wines, this may not be the wine for you.
However, if you relish plushy, exotic reds, then giddy up!
Pour alongside an abundance of cuisines. An easy choice would be slow-roasted pork shoulder, braised short ribs, and grilled flank steak. You can even throw in a bacon cheeseburger or two.
Enjoy!
