The 2020 Poderi Luigi Einaudi Barolo Monvigliero was a Merchant's Pick
Ethereal Barolo Is Our #1 Wine Of The Year!
December 31, 2024
Our #1 Wine Of The Year, the 2020 Poderi Luigi Einaudi Barolo Monvigliero, is magical - and we don't say that casually. It's succulent. It's graceful. It's complex. It's ethereal.
Ethereal perfectly encapsulates its character! It visually presents as light. When it hits your palate, it has a cool, airy profile. BUT THEN, it bursts with complexity and sings with depth and dimension that goes on for minutes. It surpasses any Barolo we've enjoyed this year!
"Wow, I wasn't expecting that!" is what we heard repeatedly from those who tasted with us and smiled as they took another sip.
Young Baroli, made from the Nebbiolo grape, tend to be big, tannic, and juvenile in their integration, reflecting the boldness of their early years before aging balances and harmonizes their structure. Yet, Einaudi's 2020 Barolo Monvigliero effortlessly shows elements of a wine with more bottle age than four, going on five years. All the elements seamlessly dovetail, falling into place (no doubt aided by an exceptional 2020 vintage), and all aspects, from fruit to tannins to acidity, effortlessly unfold on the palate.
The 2020 Poderi Luigi Einaudi Barolo Monvigliero is a masterpiece and a mandatory acquisition for Barolo, Barbaresco, and Grand Cru Burgundy fans.
A beguiling, mouthwatering entry compels you to take another sip. It is noticeably light on its feet and, at the same time, delivers amazing texture and depth. Light red in hue and translucent on the edges, it glides on the palate like pure silk while retaining its vibrancy and succulent flavors of cool, wild cherries, cranberries, fresh strawberries, pomegranate, dried herbs, crushed rose petals, black olives, clove, and forest floor. Perfectly balanced, it has tangy, uplifting acidity that seems endless.
It's exquisite. Simply exquisite!
A Tiny Parcel Produces A Tremendous Wine
Luigi Einaudi’s Monvigliero Barolo comes from a tiny, 1.5-hectare plot in the famed Monvigliero cru, where the Nebbiolo grapes are hand-harvested and among the most sought-after in the appellation.
To commemorate the estate’s 125th anniversary, the bottle is adorned with a one-of-a-kind, artist-designed label befitting the exceptional quality. (That's not a unicorn on the label, but it should be!)
Enjoy it now, as the wine is stunning today. Feel free to cellar for up to another 20 years.
This is not a Barolo wine; it's a Barolo experience!
