November 15, 2022
When thinking of New Zealand wines, one tends to think of Sauvignon Blanc.
However, world-class New Zealand Chardonnays are giving Burgundy a run for its money.
The 2021 Kumeau River Mate's Vineyard Chardonnay is a wine of sophistication, refinement, and finesse.
Kumeu River isn't just making world-class New Zealand wines; Kumeu River is producing some of the finest Chardonnays in the wine world!
"Lots of minerality with crushed stone, chalk, white grapefruit, peach stones, white apricots, wild herbs and lavender. Touch of cedar. Evolves to nutmeg and crushed almonds. Wow. It really builds on the palate, leading to a crescendo and intensity that blows your mind. Compact and phenolic, yet so agile and refined. Goes on for minutes." James Suckling
"Flagship chardonnay from a leading producer of the variety. Lush, concentrated wine with peach, nectarine, sizzled butter, hazelnut and spicy oak flavours. Distinctive and impressive wine with aging potential." Bob Campbell
What We Love About This Wine
The conditions were ideal in 2021 for Chardonnay.
The 2021 winter was relatively mild and dry. Flowering took place early. The relatively cool to warm and dry conditions allowed for slow grape maturation - all elements leading to excellent fruit.
While subtle, there are gorgeous notes of roasted nut and ever-so-mild oak. The aromas and flavors are beautifully integrated and balanced.
Here's a little fact: Kumeu River's Mate's Vineyard is made by the first "Masters of Wine" out of New Zealand, Mick and Kate Brajkovich.
Enjoy as you would your favorite Grand Cru white Burgundy.
Extremely limited. While supplies last. There are only a handful of cases to go around.
Enjoy!
