If you travel an hour or so north of Barolo, you will enter Ghemme, a sleepy Piedmont wine region at the foothills of the Italian Alps, also known as Alto Piedmonte.

Nebbiolo grown in Ghemme (and neighboring Gattinara) experiences a cooler overall climate relative to Barolo and Barbaresco.  Fruit ripening takes longer.

Good wines from this region have a finesse about them unlike any others in Piedmont.  

Great ones, like the 2016 Collis Breclemae Ghemme, are knockout Nebbiolos!
