I don’t recall what I was wearing, the weather, or even the exact words I used—but I do remember that my girlfriend became my fiancée on the evening I cracked open a bottle of Terreus de Mauro, Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León.

Terreus was so outstanding that it captivated us both.  It is the finest Spanish red I have ever enjoyed.

The estate was founded by Mariano García, who spent nearly 30 years as the guiding hand at Vega Sicilia.

Many consider Vega Sicilia the benchmark for Spanish fine wine. 

And it is (was).  

Until Terreus.

Sourced from old, low-yielding Tempranillo vines, Terreus is produced only in vintages that meet Mauro’s uncompromising standards. The 2022 release is nothing short of monumental—powerful yet composed, deeply expressive, and effortlessly elegant. Aromatically, the wine is immediate and arresting: ripe black cherry, wild blackberry, and plum layered with crushed violets, graphite, sweet spice, and subtle smoky undertones. On the palate, it is broad and velvety, yet laser-focused—dark fruit framed by mineral tension, polished tannins, and a freshness that carries through the long finish. 

Only a handful of wines stop us mid-conversation. Fewer still leave a permanent memory attached to them.

This one did both.

That night, the wine was flawless.  The moment was perfect.

The answer—thankfully—was yes.

To this day, we still talk about that bottle.  Imagine the best Rioja or Ribera del Duero you've ever had (or red wine) and make it better.  

That's Terreus. 

Rare is an understatement. Only a handful of six-packs are available. This wine reaches the United States in tiny, pre-ordered tranches—never broadly distributed, never easy to secure.

I repeat - this is the finest Spanish red I have ever enjoyed.  It is extraordinary!
