The 2023 Gerard Boulay "Clos Beaujeu" Sancerre was a Merchant's Pick
The "Grand Cru" Of Sancerre
March 27, 2025
If you are a follower of our emails, then you are certainly no stranger to the name Gerard Boulay.
His village Sancerre, “Boulay Chavignol,” is one of the most sought-after Sancerres released once a year. If you receive our features and blink, you already know the wine is gone as soon as it arrives.
You can only imagine collectors' eagerness for today's feature, his limited single vineyard Clos de Beaujeau Sancerre!
For years we have received tiny allocations of these small production gems. At long last, we have secured enough of Boulay’s coveted Clos de Beaujeu to offer our clientele!
"Powerful and concentrated, Gerard Boulay’s Clos de Beaujeu is about as far as you can get from a timid wine... It retains a purity and drive, leading to a persistent finish that's chalky and mouthwatering.” Rebecca Gibb, MW
Clos de Beaujeu is one of Sancerre’s most historic sites, established by the monks of Beaujeu in the Middle Ages who recognized that the pebbly, lime-rich soils strewn with fossils was ideal for planting the noble grape of the Loire, Sauvignon Blanc.
Known for its intense spine and chalky texture, Clos de Beaujeu is the source of some of Boulay's most profound, most structured wines - a Sancerre that is built to last.
If the Loire had designations similar to Burgundy, this would most assuredly be a Grand Cru site!!
Fewer than 50 cases of Gerard Boulay’s coveted Clos de Beaujeu came across the Atlantic to our shores, and we are thrilled to offer it.
Drink now or cellar for up to 10 years (yes, Sancerre can do that!), or do what we do: set aside a case (or two) and periodically open it as the wine evolves.
Drink as an aperitif, or pair it with salty raw seafood selections, poached white fish, or succulent poultry dishes.
Enjoy!
