The 2020 Vega Sicilia, "Pintia" Toro was a Merchant's Pick

The Lafite Of Spain!

January 09, 2024

Vega Sicilia, often referred to as the Lafite Of Spain, is Spain's most iconic winery.  The wines are on every wine-lover's bucket list.  At $500 per bottle, their flagship "Unico" falls outside the budget of most.

Many don't realize that Vega Sicilia has a world-class property in Toro, Spain, where Tempranillo is stunning!

There, the mountainous vineyards experience hot, dry summers and cold, harsh winters.  The fruit from this terroir makes our jaws drop in enjoyment with every Pintia release!

If Pintia had a different zip code (say, Rioja), it would be 4x the price!

"Brooding but fresh nose, with tarry blackberries and fresh blue fruit. Iron, wet stones, violets and a hint of mocha, too. Full-bodied, mineral and broad on the palate with a stony feel, though not heavy at all. A really elegant, nuanced and extremely poised Pintia that you can enjoy now and for the next decade. A really eclectic Pintia showing more elegance and calculation." James Suckling

Here's what we love most about Vega Sicilia's Pintia:

The wine drinks soooo much better than the press.

If you love great reds, Pintia is a must-have!

If you love Cabernet Sauvignon, Pintia is a great alternative!

If you love Tempranillos, Pintia is a cellar essential!

Vega Sicilia wines are known for their robust and structured frame.  We love Pintia for its approachability.  It will pair well with steak and grilled cuisine.

Of course, we thoroughly enjoy this wine on its own and could make a meal of it simply with a wedge of Manchego!

Cheers!

“Opulent and juicy but gentle.”

Wine Advocate

"The 2020 Pintia is from a powerful year of concentration, so they were very careful with the harvest date, did a softer vinification trying to extract less and included amphorae and less toast in the élevage. It's opulent and juicy but gentle. The wine reached 15.5% alcohol and has a pH of 3.9 with 4.4 grams of acidity. It fermented in stainless steel and oak vats with indigenous yeasts. It was a very warm and dry vintage in Toro, with a heat wave before the harvest, so they had to rush to pick the grapes; and still, the wine is richer and more powerful, even though the amphorae helped them contain the sensation of ripeness in the wine. It has a heady and ripe profile that's very aromatic and showy, with notes of very ripe berries, prunes and decayed violets, with a faint volatile twist. It matured 70% in new barrels, 10% in used barrels, 10% in stainless steel and 5% in clay pots. It's full-bodied and lush, with abundant, slightly dusty tannins. It's a ripe and powerful vintage for Pintia, but it evolves nicely in the glass, showing less of its ripe side with time, which to me is a good sign."
