The 2017 La Spinetta, "Campe" Barolo, Piedmont was a Merchant's Pick
Blue-Chip Barolo Boasts "Grinta"!
December 17, 2021
La Spinetta was best known for its highly prized Barbarescos - until 2000.
In 2000, Giorgio Rivetti ventured southwest to Barolo and purchased the Garretti Vineyard, the grapes of which were sold in bulk to other producers. He immediately ripped apart the vineyard, cutting yields by 75%, and farmed organically.
"Campe" is the upper tier of Garretti, the finest cru on the slope. It produces a complex and majestic Barolo with gorgeous rose petal, blackberry, truffle and underbrush notes.
This is really something, with superb concentration of fruit and tannins. It’s powerful yet harmonious with a muscular sense and agile feel. Blackberries and strawberries with bark and wet-earth undertones. Goes on for a long time on the palate." James Suckling
Rivetti's decision to sacrifice revenue for quality shows in the 2017 Campe Barolo!
If you are looking for a blockbuster to gift or one to enjoy yourself this season, look no further. It is a great stocking-stuffer for your cellar and will reward those with the patience to watch it evolve.
We won't blame you, however, for opening it now - just decant for 45 minutes and prepare yourself for gorgeous notes of "hazelnut paste and earthy truffle." Wine Advocate
Extremely limited.
