The 2021 Almaviva, "Puente Alto" Baron Philippe de Rothschild, Chile was a Merchant's Pick
Former "Wine Of The Decade") Impresses Again!
August 01, 2025
The demand for Almaviva continues to outpace supply. Rightly so, the quality is stunning!
A few vintages ago, James Suckling awarded Almaviva "Wine of The Decade" and "Chilean Wine Of The Year." In the past 3 years, the wine has consistently received accolades and 98 - 100 point scores. It is recognized as Chile's 1st Growth (a reference to Bordeaux's highly prized 1st Growth).
Co-owned by Bordeaux's Rothschild Family, which also owns Opus One in California, Almaviva has also earned the reputation as the “Opus One of Chile.”
If Almaviva were from Bordeaux, it would easily be twice the price. Blackberry, cassis, and tea leaves intermingle with wild and exotic rose, lavender, and earth underneath. Full-bodied and silky, the wine showcases its chewy, powerful tannins without overpowering. It’s structured and dense but not extracted. Hints of tobacco leaf and walnut remind us of a fine Bordeaux.
If you missed prior vintages of Almaviva or are looking to add to your collection, 2021 is another gorgeous expression of the wine.
Availability of this tremendous Cabernet blend is limited with each release as more of the wine remains overseas.
Be among the select few to enjoy this blockbuster Bordeaux blend from Chile, which is now ready to be enjoyed and will continue to mature over the next 15 years.
Enjoy!
