The 2020 Le Pupille Saffredi Maremma Toscana was a Merchant's Pick

100 point "Lafite Of Tuscany" • Extremely Limited!

June 14, 2024

There is something awe-inspiring about the Super Tuscan greats Sassicaia, Ornellaia, and Guado al Tasso.

With vineyards facing the Tuscan coast but at a higher elevation, there is a je ne sais quoi (or non so che in Italian)about the wines from that region of Italy.

Often called the "Lafite Of Tuscany," Le Pupille's Saffredi needs to be on your shortlist of great Super Tuscans.

A six-pack here, a six-pack there; we've been waiting years to get enough Saffredi for a feature.

"Impressive aromas of fresh herbs from the Tuscan coast, such as sage, mint, rosemary and thyme. Blackcurrants, too. Full-bodied with fine, chewy tannins that show beautiful length and consistency. Racy and beautiful, with lots of subtle and refined character. Slightly more cabernet sauvignon this year, which adds class to the wine."  James Suckling

Why The Lafite Of Tuscany?

Like a fine Bordeaux, Seffredi is a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, and 10% Petit Verdot.  In a blind tasting, you would be hard-pressed to discern whether Safferdi was a fine Bordeaux or a Super Tuscan.

The cool breeze from the ocean makes for an ideal microclimate. We love the wine's rich mouthfeel, fresh herbs such as sage and thyme, coastal influence, and refined dark fruit profile.

There are so many ways to enjoy this gorgeous red over the next decade.  Among them are fresh pasta, grilled fare, or your favorite cheese wedge.

Extremely limited.  First come, first served.

Enjoy!

Rare Release Of A Super Tuscan Titan Often Called "The Lafite Of Tuscany"

“Great persistence.”

Luca Gardini • 100 / 100

"Thanks to the wise intuition of Elisabetta Geppetti and her son Ettore Rizzi, Fattoria Le Pupille’s Saffredi found its place among the prestigious elite of the great international red wines. For this family, making wine is not only a job but a real vocation and a lifestyle choice. The emblem of the estate, blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot, from the vineyard of the same name located 250 meters above sea level. Red impenetrable colour, with violet reflections. The nose releases aromas of wild fruits, such as blueberries and blackberries, hints of bitter cocoa, touches of laurel and Mediterranean scrub. The palate is taut and dense, with brackish tannins and fruity-officinal return on the finish. Of great persistence."

Racy and beautiful, with lots of subtle and refined character. Slightly more cabernet sauvignon this year, which adds class to the wine. 80% cabernet sauvignon, 10% merlot and 10% petit verdot. Give this about three or four years of bottle age."
