The 2023 Ramey, Chardonnay "Fort Ross - Seaview" Sonoma Coast was a Merchant's Pick
We Tasted It 3x in a Month And Couldn't Get Enough!
October 20, 2025
We've opened the 2023 Ramey Fort Ross-Seaview Chardonnay three times in the past month — that alone should tell you how good it is.
Each time, it stopped us in our tracks. This wine drinks far above the press. It's one of those rare California Chardonnays that captures the soul of white Burgundy while staying true to its coastal Sonoma roots.
David Ramey has crafted something extraordinary: the elegance of Puligny-Montrachet, the finesse of premier cru Chablis, and the signature of Fort Ross-Seaview. Seashell minerality, roasted almond, lemon zest, orchard fruit, and a flicker of white pepper glide across the palate in perfect balance. The finish is racy with notes of saline and endlessly refreshing.
What the Critics Say:
- James Suckling: "Flavors of key lime and lemon curd… vibrant and concentrated."
- Wine Advocate: "Silky and vibrant, with pure, concentrated, saline-laced flavors and a long, taut finish."
- Decanter: "Mineral-driven and satiny in texture, showing tangy freshness."
This is one of the most precise and terroir-expressive Chardonnays in California today. Less oak, more place (i.e., high elevation, fog, and coastal influence – the perfect ingredients).
Pairs beautifully with:
Grilled salmon, shellfish, or a wedge of triple-crème Brie.
California Chardonnay at its best — and one you'll want to revisit more than once.
We certainly did.
