The 2019 Roagna, Langhe Rosso Piedmont was a Merchant's Pick

Barolo & Barbaresco Fans • The Ultimate Insider's Pick!

January 23, 2024

Roagna Langhe Rosso is the ultimate insider's pick!  Fine dining restaurants pride themselves on being able to source Roagna's allocated Langhe Rosso.

Crafted entirely from fruit from Roagna's holdings in Barolo and Barbaresco, this gorgeous Nebbiolo, includes fruit from their highly collectible Pira Barolo and Pajè Barbaresco vineyards.

Few Piedmont producers rival Luca Roagna.  He is often mentioned in the same sentence as Giuseppe Rinaldi, Bruno Giacosa, Giacomo Conterno, and Giovanni Gaja.

At $55, you can get a taste of Roagna's $180 - $500 Barolo and Barbarescos at a fraction of the price.

Why Is Roagna's Langhe Rosso Head And Shoulders Above Others?

The 2019 Roagna Langhe Rosso is sourced from estate grapes in both Barolo and Barbaresco; since it is a blend of the two appellations, regulations prevent the more prestigious designations ("Barolo" or "Barbaresco") from being displayed on the label. Regardless, Roagna applies the same meticulous winemaking—from fermenting to aging the wine in old casks for five years—just as he does for his top-tier wines.

The result is a bottle that delivers structure, depth, and aromatic complexity well beyond its classification broader "Langhe Rosso."

Sommeliers scramble to add this magnificent Nebbiolo to their wine lists with each vintage. They know the quality, pedigree, and value with elements of $180 - $500 estate fruit.

If you have the willpower - for the most determined - cellar.  And, if you are like us, we will be enjoying now and over the next 10 years.

Sensational!

Barolo & Barbaresco Icon And The Wine Sommeliers Covet for Their Wine Lists

“The 2019 Langhe Rosso is fabulous.”

Vinous

"The 2019 Langhe Rosso is fabulous. It captures all the pedigree of this great vintage but in a slightly more open style (especially in its aromatics) that renders it quite approachable. Crushed flowers, dried cherry, spice, mint and sweet pipe tobacco are all nicely lifted. Already quite approachable, the 2019 is ready to go. The 2019 is Pira's young vines Nebbiolo. About two-thirds of the fruit is from Pira; the rest is Albesani, Gallina and Paje. Aging is a bit more than two years in cask, a touch less than in the past"

“This radiant red has great fruit, freshness and depth.”

Kerin O'Keefe

"Made with estate Nebbiolo vines up to 25-30 years old, fermented in large neutral oak with indigenous yeasts and aged for five years, this radiant red has great fruit, freshness and depth. It offers aromas of blue flower, wild berry, citrus and a whiff of game while the vibrant palate features strawberry, blood orange, wild herb and truffle set against bright acidity that keeps it energized. Lithe tannins provide polished support."

“It could technically be classified as Barolo or Barbaresco.”

"Luca Roagna likes to joke that this is the worst wine he makes. "It is made with all the leftovers," he says. The 2019 Langhe Rosso sees Nebbiolo from Barolo and Barbaresco, pretty much in equal parts. There is some Pira and Pajè along with young vine fruit from other parcels, some of which suffered mudslide damage in the 1990s and required replanting. This wine was first produced in 2000. The labor required to make it is intense because Luca needs to scope out the young vines buried within a rich patrimony of old vines. "I am a squarehead," he says. This entry-level wine is a provocation. In fact, it could technically be classified as Barolo or Barbaresco if it were not a blend of the two appellations. It sees the same five-year winemaking and oak aging regime as those wines. The 2019 vintage shows good concentration, balanced acidity and a firm backbone. There's a lot of fresh fruit here with pressed flowers and roses."
