"The rise in quality, authenticity and standing of Beaujolais these days begs the question: Who is driving the revival?" Decanter
Wineries like Chateau de La Chaize!
Château de La Chaize is a crown jewel of Beaujolais and classified as a French national heritage site.
Their "La Chaize" monopole vineyard (owned exclusively by the winery) is located right behind the Château; this tiny monopole lieu-dit gathers the ideal site characteristics: a southeast exposure, steep slope, deep granitic soil, and old vines. This wine is one of the most sought-after Beaujolais in Burgundy.
"Needs a moment in the glass for the forest-berry aromas to open up. Very minerally and smoky with plenty of forest-floor character. Stunning concentration and great elegance right through the extremely long and finely etched finish. Difficult to pull yourself away from this remarkable Brouilly. That this is only medium-bodied actually increases its appeal. Just a hint of blood oranges in the finish magnifies its freshness." James Suckling
There are ten "crus" within Beaujolais. "Brouilly" is among the finest. This hearty Brouilly is a wonderfully versatile Gamay (grape), especially for those who want a little more heft than a Pinot Noir but not as much tannin as a Cabernet Sauvignon.
Given the wine's complexity, nuance, and versatility, it is no wonder cru Beaujolais are some of the most sought-after red Burgundies.
Enjoy this hearty red over the next five years. It is an all-year-round red to pair with grilled meats, duck, chicken, and hearty salads.
Be sure to stash a few bottles aside as this cru Beaujolais (not be confused with youthful Beaujolais nouveau) is ideal for Thanksgiving.
Enjoy!
